Whats around in February ?

Why are we fencing off the pond on the Humphry Smith Trail?

This pond was repaired some years ago but has taken longer to recolonise than we thought. We are therefore fencing it off to keep out dogs and little boys (of all ages) so it can have a time to recover. We will also do some planting around the edge and the lack of disturbance will allow these plants to establish themselves. This is only a temporary measure and we would look to take down the fence during the winter of 2012/13. The planting will have to some from within the wood, being a SSSI  (Site of Special Scientific Interest) we have to maintain the genetic integrity of the species in the woods. Fortunately there are other ponds in the woods with some interesting plants in and around them, which we can use. The water edge vegetation will be especially beneficial for dragonflies, which need plants for their aquatic larvae to climb out of the water on. The vegetation will also attract insects, which the dragonflies and birds will feed on.We apologise for any inconvenience but we are confident that the result will be worthwhile.
